Canadian Council

Unifor’s Canadian Council was held in Montreal from September 26th to September 29th and this year’s theme was “momentum”. We heard of the gains Unifor has made in various sectors through all the unprecedented strikes that took place over the past year.

Healthcare Conference

The Healthcare conference was held in Port Elgin this year from October 4th to 6th. Joanne Hay gave a very in-depth report on Health and Safety, and the right to refuse unsafe work, but parts of it did not pertain to the Healthcare sector with respect to refusing unsafe work.

We also heard from Michael Yam and his report spoke to the upcoming proposed changes to the download of duties in the Healthcare sectors. We heard of more of the duties of the RN’s will be placed on the RPN’s and more of the RPN’s duties to the PSW’s which includes the distribution of meds by the PSW’s under the license of the RPN.

November

November is lung cancer awareness month and Movember which brings awareness to Prostate Cancer and men’s mental health issues along with many more recognized days.

Unifor continues to support its members who work Media workers and Journalists by marking November 2nd as “The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists”. On this day we raise our voices to demand justice for Journalists who face grave threats and violence simply for doing their jobs, bringing truth to light and holding power accountable.

November 3rd daylight savings time ends, so remember to turn the clocks back Saturday evening/ Sunday morning.

November 11th is Remembrance Day. Please take the time and observe a moment of silence at 11:00am to honour those that paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
